Argentat is a town in the former Region of Limousin, in the region New Aquitaine.

Understand

The city is known as a priory city and walled from the Xe century. It was the scene of violent clashes between Protestants and Catholics until the middle of the 17th century.e century. During the Counter-Reformation, three convents were built there: the Récollets Convent (now Joan of Arc school), the Poor Clares Convent and the Ursuline Convent. The city has greatly enriched and developed thanks to river trade. Indeed, barges, wooden boats with a flat bottom, left Argentat loaded with wood for the Bordeaux region. This traffic ceased definitively at the beginning of the XXe century, with the arrival of the railway. Today, it is a tourist town which has kept the charm of its quays and its houses with slate roofs.
