Arlesheim is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Basel-Country.

background

The village is also the capital of the Arlesheim district.

The Ermitage- and Hollenberg-Caves, in which skeletons, tools, grinding stones and jewelry from the Old, Middle and Neolithic Age were found. The area has been settled for a very long time 1239 to the diocese of Basel. The community converted to the Reformed Faith between 1529 and 1581, but then switched back to the Roman Catholic Church. In 1679 the cathedral chapter was moved from Basel, which at the time was in Freiburg im Breisgau, to Arlesheim. As a result, the cathedral and the canons' houses were built. On August 10, 1792, the secular power of the bishop ended when General Biron, on behalf of the French nation, gave the inhabitants of the diocese the power to give themselves a new constitution. As a result of the upheaval that followed, the cathedral chapter in Arlesheim was dissolved and the cathedral church and the collegiate houses auctioned. For 22 years the community was part of France. On the occasion of the Congress of Vienna, the municipality was added to the old canton of Basel. In Arlesheim the citizens were in favor of the separation of the canton which also came about. For this reason, they have belonged to the half-canton of Basel-Landschaft since 1833, with Arlesheim becoming the district's main gate.

In 1921 the world's first anthroposophical hospital, the Ita Wegman Clinic, was inaugurated in Arlesheim.
