Vääksy canal

Asikkala[1] is located In Päijät-Häme, about 25 km from Lahti and about 125 km from Helsinki.

In the summer, Asikkala is especially known for its most popular destination, the Vääksy Canal, as well as for its cafés and boutiques surrounding the canal area, which continue the market tradition that began in the 18th century.

By plane

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport [2] is located about 125 km from Asikkala. Several airlines fly to Helsinki-Vantaa every day, e.g. From Europe. There is a bus connection from the airport to Lahti about every hour and there is an exchange connection from Lahti to Asikkala (Vääksy).

By train

The nearest railway station is in Lahti, about 25 km from Asikkala. VR has several daily services from Lahti to different parts of Finland, but especially from the Helsinki metropolitan area (long-distance trains and commuter train Z). Travel time by commuter train from Helsinki to Lahti is less than an hour.

The latest train connection is the Allegro train from St. Petersburg to Helsinki, which means that tourists from Russia can get to Lahti in about 2 hours.

By road

Asikkala can be reached from both Lahti and Jämsä along highway 24.

  • Limestone canal and rapidsKanavakulmantie, 17240 Kalkkinen. The limestone canal and rapids are national attractions. The rapids are the only free-flowing rapids in Southern Finland and the canal is the longest freshwater canal in Europe.

Asikkala has a variety of things to do in the summer. The most popular summer activities include boating, kayaking, hiking, golf and fishing. In winter, the most popular activities are cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
