Assab - city and seaport in Eritrea, on the eastern coast of the Red Sea. Assab owns an oil refinery that supplies the local market and Ethiopia. The second largest city in the country.
In 1882, the city was purchased by a private shipowner, Rubattino Shipping Company, then came under Italian rule and was used as a coal supply point for ships. The Assab refinery was built by the Soviet Union.
The city is known for its large market, beaches and nightlife.
