Assisi has several important monuments.

  • The most outstanding is without a doubt the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, a set of two superimposed Gothic-style churches, which house the saint's tomb, many of his relics, such as his habit and autograph letters, and a splendid fresco decoration, the most famous of which are the series painted by Giotto in the church superior, and which illustrate scenes from the life of the saint.

Basilica of Santa Clara.
  • THE Basilica of Santa Clara, another Gothic monument, guards the relics of the saint and the crucifix that, according to tradition, spoke to Saint Francis and indicated his vocation.
  • THE Cathedral of Assisi, dedicated to São Rufino, has beautiful Gothic-Romanesque architecture, with more recent interior decoration.
  • Church of Santa Maria on Minerva, built from one of the best preserved classical temple facades in Italy, its interior has been renovated and redecorated in a Baroque style.
  • Diocesan Museum and Crypt of San Rufino, a museum formed by the diocese of Assis and located next to the Cathedral, has an important collection of archaeological pieces and medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art, as well as a historical archive.
  • Rocca Maggiore, a castle built on top of the hill that dominates the city, has a small museum and offers a breathtaking view of the entire surrounding region.
  • Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located in the new city, is a large baroque church built around the chapel of portiuncula, the most sacred of Franciscan buildings. Its cloister still preserves cells inhabited by the first monks, the cell where St. Francis died, and the garden in which he meditated, where there is a thornless rosebush that tradition says is contemporary with the saint. Still inside the cloister there is a statue of the saint in whose arms a couple of turtledoves usually make their nest, indifferent to the movement and admiration of the tourists around.

Knife

The city's historic center still preserves its medieval air and is in good condition, and deserves a long walk to discover its corners, but prepare your breath, as the terrain is uneven and many of its alleys have steep slopes and do not allow traffic of vehicles.
