History

Acropolis.
Attic Naval Confederation before the Peloponnesian War.

According to the most common tradition, Athens had been founded by the ancient king Kekrops and was initially ruled by him and his descendants. This oldest Athens was probably confined to the castle rock of the Acropolis itself, whose vast plateau, according to legend, was skilfully leveled by the pelagos, which were suppressed by the immigration of the Ionian tribe.

The oldest city is said to have been located west and south of the Acropolis, around the Ilissos River and its source Kallirrhoë.

Athens' highest flowering occurred in the 5th century BC, after the Persian Wars. After the Greek loss at Thermopyle 480 BC. the Achaemenid king Xerxes captured the city and burned down the Acropolis. However, the traces of the invasion were soon obliterated. The Attic Sea League was formed, and soon developed into an Athenian empire that stretched across the Aegean Sea.

After the fateful Peloponnesian War in 431–404 BC. Athens never regained its former power.

On September 18, 1834, Athens became the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, and it quickly developed into a modern European metropolis.

The population exploded after the Greek catastrophic war with Turkey, when more than one million refugees after the Lausanne Peace in 1923 were forced to move from their old homelands along the coast of Asia Minor. 300,000 of these came to Athens. Between 1941 and 1944, Athens, along with the rest of Greece, was occupied by Nazi Germany.
