history

Austrian Airlines was founded in Vienna in 1957 as a state-owned Austrian airline, and it was there that the maiden flight via Zurich to London started in 1958. The Vickers Viscount aircraft and other turboprop aircraft were used for many years, until they were completely replaced by jet planes in the early 1970s. In 1994 a participation in the Tyrolean Airways, which in 1998 led to the complete takeover of the airline, in 1997 the participation in the Lauda Air with takeover in 2002. Lauda Air specializes in holiday and charter flights and is now in Austrian myHolidays has been renamed. In 2001 the Rhine valley flight taken over and merged with Tyrolean. Austrian was first a member of the aviation alliance Qualiflyer Groupbefore becoming a member of the Star Alliance has been. As a core market, the airline focused on connections to Central and Eastern Europe. Route network and hubs

Long haul

The hub of the airline and the start of long-haul flights is the Airport Wien-Schwechat. Goals include daily Bangkok and Cape Town (-2 --- 6- only winter).

Since April 19 new flights to Montreal, Summer daily, winter 5 times a week.

Austrian has a route focus on secondary destinations in Eastern Europe (Balkans, CIS), where Austrian was one of the first Western European airlines to connect such countries to Western Europe via Vienna. The emergence of low-cost airlines in Eastern Europe has hit Austrian hard.

Within the Star Alliance routes, additional flight destinations for AUA passengers are available via codeshare.
