The city of Aveiro is located on the lagoon Ria de Aveiro. Salt was extracted from this lagoon as early as the time of the Romans until the 20th century. Another line of business was fishing, and the extraction of fertilizers from seaweed and algae also played a role. Narrow, brightly painted boats called "barcos moliceiros" (seaweed boats) were used for transport, and today they are mainly used for tourist purposes. As the city is criss-crossed by several canals, it is also known as the "Venice of Portugal".
