  • 1 Cambre Abbey (Abdij Ter Kameren) Logo indicating a wikipedia link – The former abbey of La Cambre, was a monastery of noble Cistercian nuns, founded in 1201 at the source of the Maelbeek, a tributary of the Senne. Removed during the French Revolution, it was sold as national property in 1796. Between 1872 and 1909, it housed the Royal Military School. Currently, it hosts the National Geographic Institute as well as the National School of Visual Arts while the abbey church is again served by two canons regular of Prémontré and daily masses are celebrated there. In the old days extra muros, the abbey is a remarkable testimony of religious life and Cistercian architecture surviving in the Brussels region.
