Baie-Mahault (creole: Bémao or Bémawo) is a parish in Guadeloupe.
background
This rapidly growing, formerly small fishing village is located west of Pointe-a-Pitre. It is the starting point for many trips into the mangrove forests of the Grand Cul-de-Sac-Marin. It was founded by pirates in 1659 and named after the mangrove species Maho. At that time the area was called: a land submerged in water and completely uninhabitable.
It was not until 1837 that the town received municipal rights, and in 1936 the first electricity generator was installed there. The first power station built after the Second World War, the Usine Èlectrique, remains in ruins in the landscape. The old town with the town hall square and a pretty church is located directly on the Grand Cul de Sac Marin. The largest shopping center on the island is located in the modern, southern part of the city on National Road 1. To the south of it you will find the most important industrial zone of Guadeloupe with the world trade center: Jarry. The old town and the world trade center are a good 5 km apart as the crow flies. A large number of public institutions have also been established in between in recent years. In Baie-Mahault one finds inter alia. the prison, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Forestry Administration, the Chamber of Agriculture and parts of the army.

The "old town" of Baie-Mahault is almost idyllically situated by the sea. The approach can be chaotic in French, regardless of whether you are coming from the east, the south or the west. From Pointe-a-Pitre or the airport you always have to take the national road 1 (N 1). This meets the national road 2 (N 2) at the shopping center Destrelland near Destrellan in a motorway junction. In the western extension on the N 1 it is only 5 km to the next motorway junction at Lamentin. If you turn south onto the N 2 at the first motorway junction at Destrellan, it is just 1,300 m to the Moudong motorway junction, which marks the southern entrance to the Jarry industrial zone. There you drive from the N 2 directly onto the Boulevard Marquisat Du Houelbourg.

- Eglise Saint-Jean Baptiste. The church, built in 1933 by the architect Ali Tur on the foundations of an older structure that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1928. The facade with the symmetrical towers on both sides of the portal is reminiscent of fortified churches in southern France.
