Orient Bay in the northeast of the island lived on salt in the past. The Beauperthuy family is the fifth generation to live on the Spring Plantation. In the first generation they founded the Saline Company and maintained three salt lakes. The family also owned several houses in the French Quarter and provided the mayor and judge there for years. At that time, Orient Bay was already a safe haven for the big cargo sailors. Salt and live cattle were exported to Guadeloupe and Martinique, salted fish, flour, rum and wine were unloaded. The “salt house” with the tools for salt extraction was located opposite the entrance to the Club Orient. Hurricanes destroyed all visible signs of it. The dams in the salt lagoon have been preserved to this day. Fresh salt water was supplied from the southern fish lake.
The whole family, including uncles, aunts, and siblings, was involved in the salt production. This included the Gumbs family as well as L. C. Fleming's widow. Madame Fleming is now in possession of the 90-year usage rights to the Orient Salt Lake and is the owner of the island of Tintamarre. The salt production was stopped in the 1960s.
At the same time tourism began on the island. In recent years the place has become a popular tourist destination. The group around the French architect Alain Crenn played a special role in this. In addition to the kilometer-long, fine sandy beach, there are several apartment complexes, hotels, beach restaurants, small and large shopping centers and lots of water sports. The beach is particularly known as a nudist beach.
The bay is also considered a sheltered berth for sailing boats with the island of Green Cay in the back if a cyclone is forecast for the region.
It is 1.7 km from Orient Bay to the Baie de L’Embouchure, which adjoins it to the south. In the north you reach the Ilet Pinel after 2 km, in the northwest it is 3.5 km to Anse Marcel.

The Baie Orientale is a long, gently curved, white sand beach with shady palm trees, restaurants, diving, surfing and jet skiing are all on offer. Part of the beach is reserved for nudists.

In the street
The Baie Orientale can be reached from the international airport in Sint Maarten on the main road that goes around the island. From the airport you drive along the south coast via Cole Bay Hill and Cay Bay Hill towards Philipsburg. At the fork in the road to Philipsburg, however, do not turn south, but take the road that branches off slightly to the north. It runs along the north bank of the large salt lake. From there you have a beautiful view of Philipsburg, on the south side of the lake. The road then runs north to Oyster Pond and Quartier d'Orleans. The road branches off slightly to the right to Oyster Pond, and a sharp left turns right to Quartier d'Orleans. This road goes almost dead straight through the town for a good 3 kilometers. After a sharp left turn you have almost reached the entrance to the Baie Orientale.
