Baillif (creole: Bayif) is a parish in Guadeloupe.

background

North of Basse-Terre on the other side of the Rivière des Peres is the town of Baillif and the regional airport. The town was founded in 1637. At that time, the governor Charles de l`Olive decreed a donation of land to the Dominican monks. Since the place was destroyed by English attacks in 1691 and 1703, there are only a few historical buildings.

In the south lies the Peres industrial zone. It lies in a triangle that the airfield forms with the Rivière de Peres river and the sea. Only the road separates the runway from the Caribbean Sea. From there, the original location stretches 700 m north along a new breakwater in an almost 100 m wide strip. Directly to the north you will find a strongly protected, new, small harbor. The harbor basin is only about 80 m long and a little over 20 m wide.

The Fort de la Magdelaine was built in 1650.

The tower of the Père Labat was built in 1703 by Governor Auger. It is right next to the main road, in the Peres industrial zone. It is an oval structure with empty window sockets, a good two meters high. Before that, some old cannon barrels were draped.
