Bakkagerdi is a city in IcelandIt is located on Borgarfjörður eystri. The place is also often called Borgarfjörður. Not to be confused with Borgarnes at a fjord of the same name.

Bakkagerði is a small town in the easternmost fjord of Iceland, it has about 100 inhabitants and has had trading rights since 1895. The town's main livelihood is fishing and processing, trade and handicrafts, especially the processing of the minerals from the valley into everyday objects and souvenirs.

The place is characterized by wooden and peat houses that have been lovingly prepared.

The nearest airports are in Egilsstaðir and Vopnafjörður.

In the street

Bakkagerði can be reached from Egilsstaðir via Borgarfjarðarvegur, road 94.

There is a bus connection to Egilsstaðir, but not very often. It should be noted that, especially in the eastern part of Iceland, bus connections only exist during the summer season.

Tourist Attractions

  • Álfaborg. According to legend, the elf queen is supposed to reside in this rock.
  • church. In the church, the altarpiece shows Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount. The well-known painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval depicted Jesus with listeners dressed in Icelandic clothes at Álfaborg.
  • Bird colony. Close to the old port, mostly puffins and kittiwakes, but the area is inaccessible during the breeding season.
  • Naddakross. The cross bears the Latin inscription "Effigiem Christi qui transis promus honora" (the one you walk past, honor the image of Christ) and is named after a local monster that ambushed travelers. This cross has been rebuilt over and over again for centuries when the old cross has become dilapidated.
