  • Manyas Gölü - This 176km² large lake is with the nature reserve Kuş Gölü the most famous sight in the vicinity of the city. In addition to the national park, the ruins of the ancient Daskyleion can also be found here. This site goes back to the Lydians in the 7th year BC. back. Mainly Persian palace buildings from the 5th century BC were uncovered here. But this small ruin is clearly in the background when you look at the bird life. In summer three million birds of over 200 different species settle here. This was discovered in 1938 by the married couple Leonore and Curt Kosswig, who have since been committed to the preservation of this bird paradise. A permanent observation platform was set up in 1952. In 1959 the Kuş Cenneti Milli Parkı was founded in a section and gradually expanded so that it has encompassed the entire lake since 1977. That couldn't prevent the surrounding industry from increasingly polluting the lake, putting the park in serious danger. The park made further negative headlines when bird flu was first discovered here in 2005. A museum and an observation platform are available for tourists.
