To arrive

By airplane

The city of Berlin currently has 2 airports. The most central is the airport of Tegel (TXL), located about 10km from the city center. From the airport, you can use public transport - especially buses, which run from before 5 am until around midnight - to get to the center.

Two express lines (JetExpressBus [1]) make the journey with few stops, only in key locations. The X9 takes you to Zoologischer Garten station in 20 minutes. The TXL line runs to Prenzlauer Berg in about 45 minutes, with stops at Central Station (Hauptbahnhof, 25 minutes), Unter den Linden (35 minutes) and Alexander Platz (40 minutes). Express buses depart every 10-20 minutes from Terminal A and the ticket, which can be purchased from the driver, costs €2.40.

In addition, the conventional line 109 also runs to Zoologischer Garten in about half an hour, passing the metro and train stations of Charlottenburg (17 minutes), Adenauerplatz (19 minutes), Uhlandstraße (23 minutes) and Kurfürstendamm (25 minutes).

Tegel airport will close in 2014 when the new Berlin-Brandenburg (BER) airport opens next to Schönefeld, whose terminal will also close, with only part of the old infrastructure remaining in operation.

Another important Berlin airport is Schönefeld (SXF). This airport is served by Airport Express trains [2], which depart every half hour from the station located 400m from the airport and reach Zoologischer Garten in 28 minutes.

Tickets for public transport

Berlin employs a system of zones, but it is unlikely that you will need to travel beyond zones A and B, except when traveling to Potsdam or to Schönefeld Airport (SXF). Zones A and B form a very large area. The public transport system (metro, train, bus and tram) uses a common ticket.

Several options are available for unlimited travel. It's always good to check the machines for the most up-to-date price. For zones A and B, the values are as follows:

  • Single tickets cost €2.80 and are valid for any trip within two hours of validation, in a single direction. There is no limit on transfers.
  • For a single trip you can buy a short-distance ticket at €1.70, which is valid for walking up to three stations on the U-Bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (train), or six bus or tram stops, no transfers are allowed.
  • O Tageskarte (one day ticket): €7.00. Valid for endless trips until 3:00 am the next day.
  • O 4 Fahrten Karte (for four single trips purchased at once for a reduced price): €9.00. It's actually 4 individual tickets, which can be used by people on different days. However, each ticket, once validated, is only valid for 2 hours and in a single direction (not valid for a return trip, for example). For the reduced ticket the price is €5.60.
  • O CityTourCard of berlin [3] it is a ticket valid for all public transport services in areas A and B, plus a discount of up to 50% for more than 200 tourist attractions: 48 hours/€17.40, 72 hours /€24.50, 5 days/ €31.90; other fares include area C, which Potsdam is part of, and other locations in the metropolitan area. The value includes a map of the central region and a diagram with subway and train stations. On sale at ticket offices, BVG machines, hotels, airports and online. There are other versions that include discounts on other tours. See the full list here: [4]
  • The ticket for groups of up to 5 people costs €19.90 and is valid from the first trip until 3:00 am the following morning. ABC Areas, including Potsdam, €20.80..
  • A weekly ticket, with no travel limit, costs €30.00 for zones A and B, or €37.50 for zones A, B and C (includes Potsdam).

ticket purchase

  • All tickets are available from machines at train and metro stations. Payment is usually made with German debit cards (the EC Karte), coins and banknotes. In the big stations there are information desks and regular ticket offices. On buses and trams, you can buy single tickets. Most hotels also sell various types of tickets.
  • In some places, like Zoologischer Garten and Straße Eberswalder, people may try to sell you used tickets. Be careful with the trick, as the ticket may be void, or it may just be a way to facilitate the service of a pickpocket.

Ticket Validation

  • You need to validate your ticket using the machines on the train and subway platforms, or inside buses and trams. Machines are yellow/white on buses and subways and white on trains. Validating a ticket simply means that the machine will stamp the date and time the service starts using it. After validation, a ticket within its deadline will no longer have to be revalidated.
  • Plainclothes or uniformed inspectors check tickets. There is a €40 fine if you are caught without a ticket.
