Bir el-Matar (Arabic:بئر المطار‎, Biʾr al-Maṭār, „Airfield fountain“) Is a fountain with attached date palm gardens about six kilometers northeast of the city el-Bāwīṭī in the egyptian Sink el-Baḥrīya. The deep well supplies thermal water.

The fountain is only recently. The old cold water fountain, the palm gardens and the avenue with the eucalyptus trees were only built under the last Egyptian king Fārūq, whose reign lasted from 1936 to 1952.

The name of the fountain refers to a former airfield of the British occupying forces. In 1916 el-Baḥrīya was made up of supporters of Libyan descent Sanūsī brotherhood taken. In December of the same year, the Sanūsī were pushed back by British troops. From 1920 to 1922, Egyptian troops under British command were still stationed in the depression. The new well is a deep well that receives its water from a depth of around 1000 meters. The sulphurous and ferrous water has a temperature of 43 ° C, possibly too hot for bathing.

To the south of the fountain house, a swimming pool including changing rooms was also built in the 1980s. But nobody uses it, and it doesn't invite you to swim. A few meters to the south there is a small pond that can absorb the excess water.

A wide avenue leads through the palm gardens to the west. Eucalyptus trees have been planted on the south side of the avenue. Date palm gardens stretch out on both sides of the avenue.

Immediately to the west of the pump house, the hot water pours into a small pool. There are actually residents from the area who usually wash themselves in the 43 ° C hot water in the evenings. Since the area is almost deserted, you could swim there as a traveler. However, women should adapt to local customs: they should be fully clothed when bathing and their clothing should be opaque - and it is best to bathe in the dark.
