Bir el-Matar (Arabic:بئر المطار, Biʾr al-Maṭār, „Airfield fountain“) Is a fountain with attached date palm gardens about six kilometers northeast of the city el-Bāwīṭī in the egyptian Sink el-Baḥrīya. The deep well supplies thermal water.

The fountain is only recently. The old cold water fountain, the palm gardens and the avenue with the eucalyptus trees were only built under the last Egyptian king Fārūq, whose reign lasted from 1936 to 1952.
The name of the fountain refers to a former airfield of the British occupying forces. In 1916 el-Baḥrīya was made up of supporters of Libyan descent Sanūsī brotherhood taken. In December of the same year, the Sanūsī were pushed back by British troops. From 1920 to 1922, Egyptian troops under British command were still stationed in the depression. During their occupation, the British soldiers were following an airstrip for airplanes Siwa laid out and tents set up next to the slopes.
After the first well dried up, a new deep well was drilled near it.
In the east of the area, the Gebel el-Ghāba (Arabic:جبل الغابة, „the forest mountain“).
getting there
To get there you need a car or a taxi.
The easiest way to get there is from el-Bāwīṭī. Almost two kilometers west of the eastern entrance to the city, one branches off from trunk road 10 1 28 ° 20 '58 "N.28 ° 52 ′ 25 ″ E to the northeast. Right hand recognizes a large rock. From this junction it is seven and a half kilometers to Biʾr el-Maṭār. You stay on the piste and after about a kilometer you reach the area of the palm gardens and the piste becomes an asphalt road. If you stay on this road, you will see the palm gardens on the left and a rocky plateau, the Black Mountain, on the right. Past the Hotel Qasr el-Bawity and on 1 Sheikh A Schemad's tomb(28 ° 22 ′ 7 ″ N.28 ° 52 ′ 55 ″ E), Arabic:مقام الشيخ أحمد, Maqām al-Sheikh Aadmadto go around the mountain. In the area of the east end of the mountain at 2 28 ° 22 ′ 18 ″ N.28 ° 54 '42 "E the road changes direction in a curve to the north. After another kilometer and a half you will reach at 3 28 ° 23 ′ 9 ″ N.28 ° 54 ′ 50 ″ E the junction to Biʾr el-Maṭār on the western side of the road. An arrival is also about el-ʿAgūz possible, even if the route is not as well developed as the previous one. You now drive along the east side of the Black Mountain until you reach the curve mentioned above.

Shortly after the junction, the road turns into a slope. However, this avenue can be driven on with a car. The hike through the palm gardens or to Gebel el-Ghāba can only be done on foot.
Tourist Attractions
Immediately to the east in front of the palm gardens, in the area of the open space south of the avenue, are the old and new fountains. The 3 old well(28 ° 23 '7 "N.28 ° 54 ′ 40 ″ E) old well is covered by a large stone. A few meters to the west is the former water basin. You can recognize the new source by the 4 Pump house(28 ° 23 ′ 6 ″ N.28 ° 54 '43 "E) southeast of the old well. The water channel leads west to the palm gardens. You can tell by the quiet operation of the pump that it is being maintained. The 5 Next well pump(28 ° 23 '22 "N.28 ° 54 '38 "E) from a good 500 meters away you can hear it up here.
The new well is a deep well that receives its water from a depth of around 1000 meters. The sulphurous and ferrous water has a temperature of 43 ° C, possibly too hot for bathing.
To the south of the fountain house, a swimming pool including changing rooms was also built in the 1980s. But nobody uses it, and it doesn't invite you to swim. A few meters to the south there is a small pond that can absorb the excess water.
A wide avenue leads through the palm gardens to the west. Eucalyptus trees have been planted on the south side of the avenue. Date palm gardens stretch out on both sides of the avenue.

Immediately to the west of the pump house, the hot water pours into a small pool. There are actually residents from the area who usually wash themselves in the 43 ° C hot water in the evenings. Since the area is almost deserted, you could swim there as a traveler. However, women should adapt to local customs: they should be fully clothed when bathing and their clothing should be opaque - and it is best to bathe in the dark.

Longer hikes or trips can be made after el-Bāwīṭī or el-ʿAgūz to lead.
