background

Big Ambergris Cay is 5 km long, up to 2.5 km wide, 460 hectares in size and protrudes up to 28 m from the sea. The east coast plunges into the sea as a cliff, while the west side is a 13 km long mixture of rocks and sandy beach. Little Ambergris Cay is just a few hundred meters west in shallow water.

The islands changed hands several times. In 1811, John Lightburne bought them from the Bahamas. Only a few years later they passed into the possession of Horatio Stubbs, who lived on South Caicos. In 1826 he sold them for 6,000 sacks of salt. Sisal was planted on the island until the end of the 18th century.

In 1846 the "Turks Island Whaling Company" was founded. The first whale was harpooned off East Ambergris Cay on February 4, 1846. The company operated whaling until 1883.

In the 1980s, large quantities of drugs were shipped across the island.

A large, private investment company has been planning and building the Turks and Caicos Sporting Club on the island of Big Ambergris Cay for members who have to buy into the club since 2000. In phase I apartments and bungalows, central reception, restaurant, bar and lounge, 4 bowling lanes, fitness center, children's club, cinema, climbing wall, riding school with 6 horses and 2 squash courts were built. In phase II, boutiques, solar power and sea water treatment plants and a supermarket were built.

Villas cost between $ 650,000 and $ 6.5 million.
