background

At the end of the 18th century, this village was created by the settlement of mostly French planters. For decades there was no road connection to the rest of the island. Between 1868 and 1928 a steamboat passed there once a week on its way around the island. In the years from 1881 to 1946 the population grew from 582 to 784. It was not until 1931 that the 39 km long road from Arima to Blanchisseuse was completed. In the late 1970s, the coastal road to Maracas Bay was inaugurated. An expansion of the donkey runway, North Coast Bench Trail, along the coast in an easterly direction to Matelot, about 30 km away, has been prevented by nature conservationists in particular. For hikes on this path you have to expect a good 8 hours to get to Matelot.

Lower Blanchisseuse to the west is the oldest district, Upper Blanchisseuse is on Paria Main Road. Around the center of the village you will find a Catholic church, the fishing cooperative, a police station and a post office.

beaches

  • Marianne Beach, Upper blanchisseuse. A 2 km long, palm-fringed sandy beach. When it rains, the entire bay is colored brown by the water of the Marianne River.
  • Surfer's Beach, L‘Anse Martin Bay, Lower Blanchisseuse. Steps lead down the cliffs to the sandy beach. There is no infrastructure there.

getting there

In the street

  • From Arima a bad, winding mountain road leads across the Northern Ridge directly to Blanchisseuse, distance 35 km.
  • From Port of Spain via Saddle Road to the district of Maraval. In Maravel, the North Coast Road branches off to the north coast. The place Blanchisseuse can be reached via the villages of Maracas Bay and Las Cuevas. It is 30.5 kilometers from the junction in Maraval to Blanchisseuse.

Tourist Attractions

Avocat case
  • Avocat case. The Avocat Fall can be reached from the village after a 30-minute hike, which you should undertake with a guide, as the waterfall is in the middle of the jungle and cannot be reached via a path. You can ask for a guide at the "supermarket" of Blanchisseuse, a general store that is diagonally across from the church. The waterfall is 20 m high and falls into a small lake where you can swim.
  • Madama's waterfall. 15 km east of Blanchisseuse, part of the path can be driven by off-road vehicles. From Paria Bay, the walk past Grande Tacarib Bay to Madame Bay takes around 3 hours, from there a 30-minute walk inland leads to the waterfall.
  • Marianne Falls. A road leads from Blanchisseuse to the mouth of the Marianne River. The hike inland from the river mouth takes about 1 hour.
  • Paria waterfall. 7 km east of Blanchisseuse, only accessible after a long walk.
