Bloemfontein (Afrikaans for Flower source) is a city in the Free State Province downtown South Africa. As the seat of the Supreme Court, it is after Pretoria and Cape Town the third capital of the country. The city is also the birthplace of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of "Lord of the Rings" and attracts more and more tourists.

Several national roads cross at Bloemfontein. The most important is probably that N1that of Cape Town coming further after Johannesburg runs. In addition, the N6 direction East London out of town and the N8 brings the travelers either to the west Kimberley and to the east Maseru in Lesotho.

By train

Due to its location, Bloemfontein is a major hub in the South African rail network. The station is in the city center on the corner of Maitland Street and Harvey Street. South Africa's long-distance trains, the Shosholoza Meyl connect the city with almost all major cities in the country. Depending on the route, the trains run either in the Tourist Class (Sleeping car with restaurant) or in Economy class (only seats).
