background

Map of Braco and Rio Bueno

In the 18th century, sugar cane was grown on the Braco plantation and processed into raw sugar in the company's own factory. The overseer's records go back to 1755. After the end of slavery and the decline of sugar cane cultivation, they switched to cattle breeding, today horses are bred. It was about 750 hectares in size. The manor house has been significantly enlarged by the current owner, but it is on private land and cannot be visited. There was a small field airfield next to the main road that was laid out for the American Air Force during World War II. In the 1970s, drug traffickers' planes landed there regularly. Several small planes were shot down by the authorities, remnants of which can still be found at the end of the former runway. The sugar cane fields are fallow today.

About 4 km east of Braco is the small fishing village of Rio Bueno on the deeply indented bay and river of the same name. The bay is the deepest natural seaport on the island. It is said that Columbus anchored in this bay on May 4th, 1494. The place looks uninviting. There is a large Geogian-style stone warehouse by the roadside, with boarded-up windows. On the sea side is the loading facility of the Caribbean bitumen factory. Joe James is one of the most important artists on the island. There he has his gallery with an inn. Only a few steps away you will find the St. Marks Church, behind it remains of Fort Dundas. Since the expansion of the coastal road, traffic has flowed past the place. On the old main street, near the Grand Lido Hotel, in the limestone, about 5 meters above street level, is the rest of a cave that is said to have been used by the natives. About 100 meters further there is a so-called “Travel Halt”, a rest stop for through traffic with small shops, a fast food restaurant and toilets. Since the relocation of the main road there has hardly been any activity there. The main road leads in front of the hotel on a completely new route over the mountain around the town of Rio Bueno. At the highest point, about 100 meters above sea level, a small parking lane was set up on the roadside. From there you have a wide view over the coast to the east.

On the old road, halfway to the village of Rio Bueno, you get to “Yeow's Beach”. Opposite, on the other side of the street, is the village sports field. At Yeow's Beach you will find a Jerk Restaurant and the Planet entertainment center, only on weekends is there some life.

The Rio Bueno River forms the border between the Saint Ann and Trelawny counties. It rises almost in the middle of the island near Christiana as a cave river. Several times it disappears in the porous subsurface of the limestone cliffs and reappears. In those places it is then known as the Dornoch River and Quashie River.

The Grand Lido Hotel was built there in the late 1980s in the form of a small village with its own village square. For the future there are plans to build more hotels, a marina with 300 berths and a private airfield.

Tourist Attractions

  • Bengal Bridge. From 1798, this is the only full stone bridge in Jamaica. Until the bypass was built, it withstood every heavy truck. It is so narrow that no wider vehicles could drive over the bridge in both directions at the same time.
  • Fort Dundas. Fort Dundas was built in 1778 and was named after Henry Dundas, the English Secretary of State in the War Department. It was originally equipped with eight cannons. The remains of the wall are not visible from the street, they are behind the school.
  • St. Mark's Anglican Church. From 1832. The building burned down on March 1st, 2005, in 2006 the church was restored and all fire damage was removed.
