Map of Breckerfeld

background

Breckerfeld is a small, rural place with the centers Breckerfeld and Waldbauer and the parts Berghausen, Brenscheid, Heider Kopf (current building area), Loh, Möcking, Osenberg, Rafflenbeul and Westerfeld.

Steel processing in the Ruhr area began in Breckerfeld. Here, turf iron stone was found and processed in small racing ovens, the required charcoal obtained in charcoal piles. Known were the knives and daggers that were made in blacksmiths. At the time, the city was also part of the Hanseatic League.

In 1396 Breckerfeld received city rights, also because it was a border town between the county of Mark and the Duchy of Berg.

In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, devastating fires devastated the city several times. The Catholic Church of St. James was built after the last city fire (1727). It and the evangelical St. James Church of the same name are named after the Way of St. James that runs along here. The Protestant church was probably used by pilgrims as early as the Middle Ages.
