background

Buri Ram (the place name means "city of joy") is originally a foundation of the Khmer, whose empire with the center Angkor ruled the northeast of present-day Thailand until the 13th century. An estimated 50% of the inhabitants of Buri Ram province are Khmer descendants, but many have now assimilated to the dominant Thai culture.

Until the turn of the millennium, Buri Ram was a rather sleepy provincial town like many others. Significantly favored by the “church tower policy” of the influential politician and string puller Newin Chidchob, the so-called “Godfather of Buri Ram”, it has experienced a considerable boom. The Rajabhat University Buri Ram has around 10,000 students, the soccer club Buriram United has won the national championship and the cup almost every year since 2011 and has even taken part in the Asian Champions League internationally. In 2014, the Buriram International Circuit opened as the largest motorsport race track in Thailand, on which various international car and motorcycle races are held.
