Burnie is a city on the northwest coast in the state Tasmania, an island of Australia. It was named in 1827 as Emu Bay (Emu Bay), founded and named after a flightless bird. In the early 1840s the place was named after William Burnie, a director of the Dutch East India Company.

With around 20,000 inhabitants, the place is of great importance for the region, as it has a deep-sea port that can also be reached by container ships. Burnie is determined by the heavy industry for mechanical and plant engineering and the fifth largest container port in Australia. It is the fourth largest city in Tasmania. Burnie runs a public and private hospital, university, college, and continuing education institute.

The landscape on the northwest coast has remained relatively untouched by humans. Rainforests, meandering and raging rivers and a strongly rugged coastline dominate the landscape.

In the area around Burnie there is a successful agriculture and a well-known cheese factory has set up in the city, which offers excellent products of the region. Forestry is also of great importance.
