Butare is a city of Rwanda.
Understand
To go
Several minibus companies go from Kigali to Butare. They are easy to find at the Kigali bus station. The price is 2 500 RWF per trip.
Circulate
There are plenty of taxis, motorcycle taxis and bicycle taxis, all eager to pick you up. Also, you can walk from the northernmost part of Butare (the bus station) to the southernmost (the University of Rwanda) in about 20 minutes. Taxis are there mainly to take Rwandans to their homes further outside the city.
To see
- 1 National Museum of Rwanda
5 000 RWF for non-residents.. – The National Museum is a surprisingly comprehensive and interesting museum. Even travelers familiar with Rwanda's recent history will learn a lot about Rwanda's colonial and postcolonial governments, as well as the Tutsi monarchy that preceded them. Many cultural attributes specific to Rwanda will have more meaning after a visit to the national museum.
- 2 National University of Rwanda – Although a walk through the university takes a maximum of 20 minutes, it is an interesting trip to see an active African university. The students here are almost all scholarship recipients, selected on the basis of test results; they sleep two per bed in dormitories located on campus.
Do
To buy
- Marlet – very active market open every day except Saturday. Although there are no souvenirs for sale, this market is a great way to learn how Rwandans buy their daily needs. Be prepared to negotiate.

Housing
- 1 Ibis – By far the best hotel in Butare is the Ibis hotel, which has been a landmark in the city since the 1940s. Run by a Belgian family for several decades, the Ibis is the only hotel in Butare with a reliable restaurant open every day of the week, as well as hot water and electricity practically 24/7. The large patio with terrace is ideal for the consumption of Mutzig or Primus (popular beers in Rwanda) or occasionally sorghum beers. Of course, another option is to stay in another (cheaper) hotel and eat at the Ibis restaurant, which is open to everyone.
- Shalom Guesthouse (Near the old university presbytery, at the southern end of town.),
250 05125041, 250 55109819, e-mail : [email protected]

Around
- 1 Nyanza (25 km north on the RN 1) – Nyanza is a small town with a market and a few hotels. Main attraction is the Museum of the Palace of the Kings.
- 2 Murambi (Murambi Genocide Memorial Center) – In 1994, Murambi was the scene of a great massacre at a vocational school where several hundred Tutsis were hiding. It has been transformed into one of the most fascinating and graphic monuments of the genocide with preserved bodies on display.
