Buynaksk in winter
Buynaksk is best known as the former capital of the short-lived United Mountain Dwellers of the North Caucasus republic, a union of Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia before all three were assimilated into the Soviet Union in 1921. Little remains from its 4 years as capital city, and Soviet planners erased nearly all of its cultural heritage with typical early Soviet brutalist architecture.

The Local History Museum
- 1 Museum of History and Local Lore (Историко-краеведческий музей), улица Ленина, 12, ☏ 7 872 372-17-75. One of the first museums of the Republic of Dagestan, the museum's emphasis is on the history of the republic itself and local culture. It used to house an entire section dedicated to Stalin during the Soviet era, but that has greatly been reduced.
