Traffic chaos in Cairo

There are several ways to get around in Cairo.

By public transport

Cairo also has a metro network with currently two lines. Unfortunately, there are not many tourist sites along the metro line, except for Coptic Cairo, also known as Al-qahira Al-qadima (Old Cairo). Furthermore, there are buses everywhere that are usually overcrowded. There is no indication on the bus where it is going and this is usually called by the ticket seller. Traveling by bus is not recommended for women because of the crowds and pawing.

By bike

By taxi

The easiest way is to just hail a black and white taxi and be transported to your destination. Keep in mind that these taxis don't have meters and the driver will always want too much money from you. Most tourists agree a price with the driver in advance, but the Caires get in and pay when getting off and then just walk away. In addition to the black and white taxis, there are recently also yellow taxis with meters that do work, but this makes taxi travel a lot less exciting.

Safety

When it comes to crime, Cairo is one of the safest cities in the world. Please note that the vast majority are Muslim and it is inappropriate to walk around in shorts in some areas. For women, it is advisable not to travel alone and to cover the shoulders. It regularly happens that Western women receive sexual proposals or are indecently groped and sometimes raped in the street. It is also wise for women not to use buses because in the crowds people can be quite pawing.

When Friday afternoon prayers are going on in the mosque, it is better to avoid large crowds in the center.
