Understand

History

It can be concluded that the village of Cabeceiras de Basto dates back to BC due to the existence of dolmens and some fortified remains in the surroundings. Also in Roman times there was a settlement in this place, a fact evidenced by the existence of a Vestal temple in the surroundings of the village and by the finding of ceramic objects, statues, etc.

The village's name probably comes from the Bastos, people who, coming from Andalusia, passed through this region and here founded a town called Basto, close to the Monastery of Santa Senhorinha, in the year 711.

  • , Republic square (In the center of the village; it's hard not to notice him). An extraordinary monastery, once one of the richest in Minho, located in the center of the village. It is a very old monastery, dating back to when, but it already existed at the beginning of the 12th century. However, at the beginning of the 17th century, the monastery was completely razed and rebuilt. The current construction is completely baroque, with beautiful altars in gilded woodwork and two organs, one on each side of the church. It is the most imposing and important monument in the village. As well as visiting the church, don't forget to enter through the door on the left and see the cloister (now the Town Hall), although the church is much more impressive. Free of charge.

  • , Republic square (in front of the Tourist Office). Located in the center of the village, the statue of Basto is, together with the Monastery, the ex-libris of the village. It represents a Lusitanian warrior and was found a short distance from the village, in Santa Comba. This granite statue, dating from around the 1st century BC, no longer has its original appearance, being heavily modified (including the addition of boots and mustaches, etc.). It is related to a curious legend - Hermígio Romarigues, presumed founder of the monastery, upon seeing Tarik's troops approaching, who were coming to conquer the Visigoth Empire, assured: "Until then, by S. Miguel, until then, I'm enough!".Three times they hurled the Moors against the monastery's defenses; and three times Hermigio repelled them with his sword. O Basto was supposedly (although much earlier than that time) an homage to Hermigio Romarigues, "O Basto".
