Background
The first settlements on the territory of Cacouna date back to 1721 and became more important around the year 1765 when a group of Acadians settled in the area. The town was officially founded in 1798, while the parish dates back to 1835.
Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with the construction of the railway between Rivière-du-Loup and the maritime provinces, many wealthy English-speaking families of Montreal and of Toronto they decided to build luxurious summer residences in the area. In this period, during the summer season, the town came alive and hosted numerous parties.
Thanks to the pressure of the banker Hugh Montagu Allen who had built his own summer residence near Cacouna, the Château Montrose, a new branch of railway was built in 1900 between Rivière-du-Loup and Cacouna.
