Camaguey (city) - Camagüey (stad)

Camaguey is the capital of the province of the same name in Eastern Cuba. The city has approximately 325,000 inhabitants (2004) and is therefore Havana and Santiago de Cuba the city with the most inhabitants. The historic city center of Camagüey was included in 2008 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Info

The city was - in contrast to its present location - originally founded in 1515 on the north coast under the name Santa Maria del Puerto del Principe. In 1528 the city was moved inland to avoid the almost continuous attacks by pirates.

The symbol of the city is a rain barrel, also called tinajon called. This is used to collect rainwater, so that it can be used later. These barrels can be found literally everywhere, as a monument or for real use.
