Location of Canavieiras within the state of Bahia

cane trees, or "Cannes" as it is known, is a city of Bahia. The municipality is also known as the Crab Capital.

Understand

The year 1700 is considered the beginning of the town of Canavieiras. At the time, the municipality was part of the captaincy of São Jorge dos Ilhéus.

Even though Jorge Figueiredo was the land grantee, the land located at the mouth of the Pardo river (formerly Patipe) remained for a long time depopulated by whites. With the dismemberment of islanders, in 1833 the territory was renamed Imperial Vila de Canavieiras, and even in this century it started to create new population centers, aiming at the colonization and expulsion of the Indians who lived there, in addition to the exploration of precious metals discovered at the time.

It is in Canavieiras that the first cacao tree was planted, brought from the Amazon, ensure local guides. In colonial times, sugar cane was the driving force of the local economy, today coconut and piassava do it and guarantee beautiful views of farms along the way to reach the city.

Why cane trees? One of the first families to move from Poxim to the mouth of the River Patipe (today Pardo) was the scallop, and in addition to the surname, like others, they were dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane. That is why, Scallop Cane, Sugarcane.

Despite becoming famous after serving as the stage for recordings of a TV Globo soap opera, "Porto dos Milagres" (free adaptation of the novel "Mar Morto", by Jorge Amado, iconic writer from Bahia), Canavieiras is not a frequented city by mass tourism, being a good option for those who want to enjoy nature. Your neighbor, the Watchtower Island, it is more agitated. There, in stretches of Praia da Costa, there are monazite sands, which, they say, are good for health. The island is connected to Canavieiras by a bridge.
