background

Around 3000 BC, the island was probably already visited by Ciboney Indians. Around 250 BC the Arawak Indians came, who were driven out by the Carib Indians around 1300.

Around 1770, King George III claimed. of England the island and had it measured. He distributed the land to five families for good offices. It was the Brisbane, Decato, De Cazeau, Patrice, and Snagg families. The Snagg brothers successfully cultivated sugar cane and were soon in possession of 680 of the 730 hectares of farmed land. After the drop in sugar prices, they grew cotton. One of Snagg's sons learned shipbuilding from the English carpenter Benjamin George Compton. His boats became the base of whaling on the island.

In 1921 a hurricane destroyed the workers' homes on Snagg Plantation in the north of the island. As a result, the place Charlestown was built in the south, where more protection from storms was hoped. In 1946 the Snaggs sold their lands to the Saint Vincent government. In the years that followed, the 700 inhabitants lived off some agriculture and fishing. In the mid-1990s, around 350 hectares of land were sold to an Italian consortium. The Carenage Bay Beach and Golf Club was created under the management of Rosewood Hotels International. In December 1998 the airfield was officially opened.

The name Canouan comes from the Indian language, it means turtle. The island is 6.6 km long and up to 3 km wide in the north, but the crescent-shaped southern half is only 600 m wide on average, resulting in an area of 7½ km². Mount Royal is 274 m high. Canouan has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. The inhabitants live mainly from fishing or as small farmers. The main town is Charlestown on Grand Bay. The long, flat, reef-protected, light sandy beaches are said to be among the most beautiful in the whole of the Caribbean.

The northern, larger half of the island is now privately owned by Trump International. Bars, boutiques, a golf course, a hotel, a marina, restaurants, a casino and a villa district were built there. The airfield was enlarged. Another marina is also being built there.
