Capileira is a small community in the mountain region Alpujarras in spanish Granada province with about 500 inhabitants. The mountain village in the Sierra Nevada is one of the highest municipalities in Spain.

Era de Trilla

The place is a popular starting point for hikers, in Spanish Senderismo, but also for mountain bikers. High alpine tours in the area of ​​the 3482 m high Mulhacén, which can be reached in a few hours, also start here.

  • Sendero de la Cebadilla. The circular hike to the abandoned workers' settlement takes about 3-4 hours (approx. 8-9 km) there and back La Cebadila which was once built for the workers of the nearby hydropower plants. The trails follow the canyon of the Rio Poqueira, on the way there are also numerous Era de Trilla past, places where the grain used to be threshed.

Despite the manageable size of Capileira, the essential infrastructure is available, a sufficiently large supermarket of the chain Coviran can be found in a side street of the Carril Street. A special shop for a mountain village is that of the leather tailor J Brown in the Calle Doctor Castilla who sells leather clothing and handbags from his own production there.

Thanks to tourism, there are numerous restaurants in the mountain village and you don't really get the feeling of being ripped off anywhere. In many places there is an Alpujarras platter in a dish Patatas povres served with local meat specialties, mostly longaniza (sausage in this region), morcilla (blood sausage) and jamon (raw ham).
