Carennac is a village of Lot located in Dordogne valley, classified among the most beautiful villages in France.

Understand

On a rocky terrace overlooking the river, Carennac stretches along the banks of the Dordogne. The site has been occupied since the Gallo-Roman period but it was the Abbey of Cluny that made it famous by founding a priory there in 1047.

After a long period of prosperity, the monastic village was ravaged by the Hundred Years War before being rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. The village then incorporated Renaissance art and the Chateau des Doyens was erected along the northern side of the church. This castle now houses the Land of Art and History.

Opposite Carennac is the island called Calypso, a charming nymph from Greek mythology who seduced Ulysses and welcomed his son Telemachus. Fénelon would have written here his famous educational treatise "The Adventures of Telemachus" for the attention of the grandson of Louis XIV.
