Carmen de Patagones is a city in the extreme south of the argentinianBuenos Aires Province. It is opposite the larger one Viedma on the Río Negro.

background

Carmen de Patagones is the oldest city in Patagonia and was an isolated base for a long time, as large areas around it were still from the Mapuche and Tehuelche were mastered. It was not until 1880 that the Argentine state managed to gain effective control of the area. The price: a genocide that claimed tens of thousands of victims.

getting there

By plane

The airport is in the neighboring city Viedma. Few connections, most after Buenos Aires.

By bus

Patagones has its own bus station. You can therefore arrive here as well as in Viedma. While the Patagones bus station is centrally located, that of Viedma is on the outskirts. So you usually have to take a bus or a taxi to get to the interesting areas in the center.

By train

A train leaves Patagones Buenos Aires off once a week. Another line leads from Viedma to San Carlos de Bariloche.

In the street

Carmen de Patagones is on the Ruta Nacional 3 and is easily accessible from the north and south. The best way to get there from western and central Argentina is via the Ruta Nacional 250 at.

By boat

A passenger ferry runs from the center of Viedma to Carmen de Patagones over the Río Negro.

mobility

The city buses run frequently in the twin cities and not only connect the individual districts with each other but also the neighboring city of Viedma.

Tourist Attractions

In contrast to Viedma and the other cities of Pategonia, Patagones still received some colonial buildings.

  • cathedral. Worth seeing building with two towers.
  • City fortifications. Only partially preserved. Good view of Viedma from some of the remains of the city wall.
  • Cerro de la Caballada. Hill with a monument commemorating the conquest of the Argentine armed forces. Popular lookout point, approx. 2 km east of the center.

activities

You can go in the Río Negro Swimming, but the Viedma site is better. Canoeing is also popular, with one of the longest canoe regattas in Argentina taking place here.
