Cebu City (filipino: Lungsod ng Cebu; Dakbayan sa Sugbo) is the capital of the province Cebu On the Philippines.

As early as 1521 when Magellan landed on the island, he realized that the island had an ideal climate for establishing a base. Unfortunately, Magellan didn't get much from it as he was killed by chief Lapu Lapu. Today Cebu is a modern Filipino city, in which one can still find traces of the Portuguese occupation. The island is ideal for snorkeling and swimming and the airport makes it an ideal starting point for further exploring the Philippines. The city is used to tourists, especially from Japan and Korea, which is why it is also well developed for tourism.

The best way to get from one place to another is by taxi. All taxis are metered and most drivers understand English. If you want to travel longer distances or to destinations where there are few passengers, a fixed price has to be negotiated. If necessary, give the taxi driver's mobile phone number, as you will not find a taxi in remote places, but the taxi driver will come to pick you up. For short distances you can take a tricycle for 7 peso per person. In Cebu these are very uncomfortable.
The best way to get from the airport is to take the MyBus, which will bring you directly into the city, at the previously known fixed price.
Otherwise you can find drivers in all major cities in the Philippines via Uber or the Grab app (the latter is more common than Uber) who are closer and bring you to your destination inexpensively but more comfortably than in a tricycle.

The Crown Regency Hotel has the top floors of the Skyadventure, where you can do a Skywalk outside the building and take a small train around the roof. The degree of inclination of the track can be individually adjusted by the driver. It is definitely worth doing this, as you have a beautiful view of the city from the roof of the skyscraper. If you want to relax, you can go to one of the many beaches and try to cool off in the lukewarm water of the Pacific. It is very advisable to borrow a parasol, as you can only endure the sun for a short time, even with very good sun protection.

As everywhere there are various markets and malls. The largest malls are the Ayala Center and the SM Mall. The prices are exorbitantly high compared to the earnings in the Philippines and comparable to the prices in Germany. For shopping and passing the time, the SM Mall is preferable to the Ayala Center. There is a big cinema and various very good restaurants with local cuisine. At some restaurants there are queues in front of the door during peak hours and you have to plan around 20 minutes of waiting time.
The most famous market is the carbon market. There are mainly everyday items and groceries. Because of thieves, one shouldn't go too deep into the market and leave all valuables in the hotel. Tourists who are not familiar with Asia should avoid the market.

The cuisine of Cebu has a specialty: Lechon Cebu, which is a particularly grilled suckling pig. But there are also all other Filipino specialties, which have the typical island taste. You can also see the influence of the American occupation, which is reflected in numerous fast food restaurants. Cebu is known for its mangoes. The yellow mangoes, which in Germany are only offered in selected delicatessen shops at very expensive prices, are perfect in taste. But you should definitely try the green, unripe mangoes. These are eaten with a little salt and they are a special refreshment in the hot weather. This also applies to the freshly squeezed fruit juices, which are often offered.
nightlife
The nightlife of Cebu is heavily influenced by bars and clubs, where mainly Korean tourists and old Americans are after cheap sex. You should spend the evening either at the hotel bar or in one of the restaurants in the malls. A visit to the local grill stations is only recommended in a larger group or with local friends. Due to the extreme poverty of the population, a rich foreigner can easily be the target of an attack.

Cebu is a relatively safe city in the Philippines, but you should never go to remote areas alone or walk the streets alone at night. Due to the high level of poverty, the inhibition threshold is very low. Islamist attacks as in other regions of the Philippines are not to be expected.
