Its construction was started two years after an international competition won by the Italian architect Vittorio Meano whose greatest success was the incorporation of an imposing dome eighty meters high and clearly of Antonellian derivation which strengthened the monumentality of the building marked by Greco-Roman art.
- It was inaugurated in 1906 by the Argentine president José Figueroa Alcorta but the works for its completion continued for the next 40 years.
- The sculptural groups located on the sides of the access esplanade are copies of the originals, made by the sculptress Lola Mora for the inauguration of the Legislative Palace. The statues on the left (on the side of via Hipolito Yrigoyen) represent freedom and commerce, those on the left symbolize peace, justice and work.
- The portico in the shape of a Corinthian temple is surmounted by a bronze sculpture eight meters high and weighing twenty tons, made by the sculptor Victor de Pol. The sculpture represents the triumphant Republic on a chariot drawn by four horses.
- The four corners of the palace are decorated with sculptures of winged victories, also made by Victor de Pol.
- The interior is characterized by immense halls including the central one, the salón azul, surmounted by the majestic dome of the palace. From the center of the dome hangs a huge bronze chandelier weighing two tons and three meters in diameter. made on the occasion of the 1910 industry exhibition,
Palacio Barolo
- 10 Palacio Barolo, Avenida de Mayo 1370, ☎ 54 11 4381-1885.
Mon-Sat 09: 00¬20: 00. Palace built by the Italian architect Mario Palanti commissioned by the textile entrepreneur Luis Barolo.
- It was the first reinforced concrete structure in Buenos Aires. Inaugurated on 7 July 1923, Palacio Barolo remained with its 90 m. the tallest building in the city until 1935, when the 120-meter Kavanagh skyscraper was completed.
- On its terrace was placed a huge lighthouse with 300,000 lamps that made it visible from Montevideo, on the opposite bank of the Rio de la Plata.
- The architect Mario Palanti had built a similar building in the Uruguayan capital, Palazzo Salvo, on top of which a powerful lighthouse was also placed. In the intentions of Palanti the lights of the two lighthouses were destined to meet to illuminate the entrance to the Río de la Plata at night but this did not happen due to a calculation error.
- Since both the commissioner and the designer were passionate about Dante Alighieri, Palacio Barolo is an allegory of the Divine Comedy: Its height is 100 m, how many are the songs of the opera while the floors are divided into three sections corresponding to the three canticles (hell, purgatory and heaven). The dome is inspired by the Rajarani Hindu temple of Bhubaneshvar and symbolizes Dante's mystical love for Beatrice.
