Palacio Barolo
  • 10 Palacio Barolo, Avenida de Mayo 1370, 54 11 4381-1885. Simple icon time.svgMon-Sat 09: 00¬20: 00. Palace built by the Italian architect Mario Palanti commissioned by the textile entrepreneur Luis Barolo.
It was the first reinforced concrete structure in Buenos Aires. Inaugurated on 7 July 1923, Palacio Barolo remained with its 90 m. the tallest building in the city until 1935, when the 120-meter Kavanagh skyscraper was completed.
On its terrace was placed a huge lighthouse with 300,000 lamps that made it visible from Montevideo, on the opposite bank of the Rio de la Plata.
The architect Mario Palanti had built a similar building in the Uruguayan capital, Palazzo Salvo, on top of which a powerful lighthouse was also placed. In the intentions of Palanti the lights of the two lighthouses were destined to meet to illuminate the entrance to the Río de la Plata at night but this did not happen due to a calculation error.
Since both the commissioner and the designer were passionate about Dante Alighieri, Palacio Barolo is an allegory of the Divine Comedy: Its height is 100 m, how many are the songs of the opera while the floors are divided into three sections corresponding to the three canticles (hell, purgatory and heaven). The dome is inspired by the Rajarani Hindu temple of Bhubaneshvar and symbolizes Dante's mystical love for Beatrice. Palazzo Barolo (Buenos Aires) on Wikipedia Palazzo Barolo (Q571763) on Wikidata
