background
Traces of an initial settlement show that the region was already inhabited in the Stone Age. The place became a chief in 1816 John Ross founded, he served under the name Ross's Landing as a trading center with the people of Cherokee. The city was named after these Indians were forcibly expelled in 1838 Chattanooga, supposedly derived from the near Lookout Mountain. Another interpretation from the Cherokee language means "Crow's nest". Several battles took place near the city during the American Civil War. In the 20th century the city became an important industrial location, unfortunately with the reputation of being "the dirtiest city in America". However, this has improved significantly.
