Cherokee Sound - Cherokee Sound

background

The little fishing village Cherokee Sound with no more than 160 inhabitants is very secluded around 35 km south of Marsh Harbor at the end of a peninsula, across from Casuarina Point on the island Abaco. Long-time residents only call the place "The Place". The origin of the name is not known. According to the theory, it goes back to the wild cherry trees: cherry tree - “Cherry Cay” is entered in old sailing cards at Cherokee Sound. Documents on marriages, births, deaths but also on agricultural yields and rainfall are in Nassau's archives from the early 1800s, further information is missing. It is known, however, that robbing stranded ships was a major occupation. In addition, ropes were made from sisal.

The inhabitants are descendants of loyal royalists who came to the island in 1783. There are a number of old, photogenic colonial houses. In 1990 there was still no road connection to the place and only since 1996 have people there been familiar with electricity. There are two churches, a schoolhouse with two classrooms, a post office, library, laundry and a supermarket. But there is no bar or restaurant.

Between Cherokee Sound and Little Harbor, the Abaco Club on Winding Bay has emerged in recent years. This is a closed community of owners on 216 hectares of land with its own golf club on Winding Bay. Many houses are worth millions. Club membership alone costs $ 75,000.
