This province is located in the north of the country. Bordering provinces (from the northeast clockwise) include: Chiang Rai Province, Lampang Province, Lamphun Province, Tak Province and Mae Hong Son Province. To the north, the province borders Myanmar's Shan State.

This province is surrounded by many mountains, the mountain ranges usually run in the North-South direction. The Ping River, one of the main tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates from Chiang Dao Mountain. The highest mountain in Thailand, with an altitude of 2,575 m is Mount Doi Inthanon, located here. Many national parks are located here: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Mae Ping, Sri Lanna, Huay Nam Dang, Mae Phang, Chiang Dao.

The city of Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom after it was founded in 1296. In 1599, the kingdom lost its independence and became part of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. In 1932, Chiang Mai province became a secondary administrative unit of Thailand when the administrative unit Monthon Phayap, the ruins of the Lanna Kingdom was dissolved.

13.4% of the province's population is mountainous ethnicity, including the Hmong, Dao, Lahu, Lisu, Akha and Karen people.
