Chillán is a city, capital of the Ñuble Region, in Chile. It was founded on June 26, 1580 by Martín Ruiz de Gamboa, on the banks of the Chillán River, a site that today is known as Chillán Viejo. The city is made up of two administrative divisions, called communes, which are the commune of Chillán and the commune of Chillán Viejo. Likewise, the city is recognized for its local references, who stand out in their military and artistic fields.

In its surroundings, there are rural towns that have various tourist attractions, such as the Chillán Hot Springs, located in the Andes Mountains; the town of Quinchamalí, which stands out in its pottery, or the city of San Carlos.

Understand

Formerly, the area in which the city is included, was inhabited by indigenous people. It was not until 1536 when the first contact between Spanish and native conquerors took place, a fact that is described by the Battle of Reinohuelén. In 1580, the city was founded by Martín Ruiz de Gamboa, on the banks of the Chillán River.

In 1655, the city was destroyed by an attack by indigenous people and it was rebuilt in the El Bajo sector, in the current commune of Chillán Viejo, in 1600. In 1751 an earthquake occurred that destroyed the city again and it was re-founded that same year, in the current site of Chillán Viejo. A second earthquake, in 1835, forced the reconstruction of the city in its final location.

Already in 1939, an earthquake occurred, considered the deadliest in the history of Chile, with more than 30,000 people dead, which meant for the country the implementation of new laws for the construction of buildings.

Finally, in 2010, the region in which the city is located is the epicenter of the 2010 Chile Earthquake, affecting various constructions. Already in 2016, the city is declared as the capital of the Ñuble Region.
