History
Captain William Mynors of the Royal Mary, a British East India Company ship, gave the island its present name when he passed it on Christmas Day in 1643.
The island had been marked on British and Dutch navigational maps since the early 1600s, but it was not until 1666 that the island was depicted on a map published by the Dutch cartographer Pieter Goos. Goos gave the island the name "Mony", the meaning of this is unclear.
When the island was explored by British navigator William Dampier in March 1688, it was uninhabited, two of his crew were the first people to set foot on Christmas Island.
Daniel Beekman's visit to the island was recorded in his book in 1718, he made a journey to and from the island of Borneo.
