Kemaman City (also to distinguish it from the administrative district of the same name Chukai or Cukai) is a city in the province Terengganu on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsula.
background
Chukai or Kemaman City is the economic center of the Kemaman district in the state of Terengganu. The city is south of Kuala Terengganu and Dungun as well as north of Cherating and Kuantan. The city center is limited by the river of the same name (Sungai Kemaman) and Highway No. 3 to an area of around 2 × 1 km². In the middle is a wooded hill, which has to give way to more and more new buildings. The city is not characterized by tourism and rather serves as a starting point for beaches in the area.
getting there
Kemaman is on Highway 3, which opens up the east coast of Malaysia.
By train
Chukai has no rail connection.
By bus
Chukai has two bus stations:
- At a small terminal in the north-east of the city center, directly on the promenade, buses from the agency S.P.Bumi stop to and from Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu (including stops in the smaller towns along the way).
- A significantly larger bus station (M'Dan S'Lera Geliga) is located in the Geliga district on the other side of the bridge over the Sungai Kemaman towards the south-west or Cherating. There are long-distance buses to all major cities on the peninsula. The bus station can only be reached from the city center via the expressway, on the shoulder of which you can just walk. A taxi costs 15RM; With a bit of luck, you might even find a local who drives you over the bridge.
mobility
Local public transport is poorly developed or not developed at all. You have to rely on rental cars, scooters or taxis. The taxi rank is to the east of the small inner-city bus station; easy to recognize by the many parked yellow cars. Private individuals try to pretend to be taxi drivers at bus stations. A taxi to Cherating costs 30RM.
Tourist Attractions
The city itself has little to offer apart from a few mosques and a nicely laid out promenade that stretches along the north and east banks of the river with interruptions.
activities

Chukai is known among locals for its coffee houses, where people passing through from the freeway stop. In particular a Kopitiam called Shark peng is very well known and - whether an original or a copy is an open question - can be found in at least three locations within the city. The coffee served there is nothing special by European standards, but the atmosphere reflects the Malaysian reality well due to the fact that only a few foreign tourists get lost in the place.
beaches
There are some beaches south of the city:
- The elongated one Pantai Geliga is about one kilometer east of the large bus station (around 4km outside the city center) and is bordered by conifers. The water is cloudy because of the nearby estuary. Entering the beach is prohibited between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. because turtles lay their eggs or hatch. Night trips to the beach are organized in Cherating.
- The Pantai Geliga goes seamlessly into the Pantai Keluk Mak Nik about that too Monica Bay is called. The dead end street behind the beach offers plenty of parking spaces and food stalls.
- South of Monica Bay there are other lonely beach bays, which, depending on the tide, are more or less well separated from each other by boulders protruding into the sea.
