Geography
Châtel is, at 1 200 m altitude, the last village of the Val d'Abondance. Located in the French Chablais, a massif in the north of the Pre-Alps, on the border of the canton of Valais, Châtel is a mid-mountain resort. The village is watered by the Dranse d'Abondance, which rises near the hamlet of Plaine Dranse and joins the Dranse de Morzine before flowing into Lake Geneva between Thonon-les-Bains and Évian-les-Bains.
Departmental road 22 connects Châtel to Thonon-les-Bains, some forty kilometers further, in 45 min about. The Pas de Morgins marks the border with the Swiss canton of Valais and the resort of Morgins. Although the Avoriaz resort is bordering on Châtel, there is no road allowing direct access to Avoriaz or Morzine by car, it is necessary to bypass the Mont de Grange massif. On the other hand, the ski link between the two resorts is direct.
