Constanza is a city in the Dominican Republic in the province of La Vega in the region Cibao.
background
The formal foundation of the town took place in 1894. At 1,200 m above sea level, the Constanza Valley is the highest valley in the country, partly overgrown with Hispaniola pines (Pinus occidentali). Temperatures there are between 5 and 12 ° C throughout the year. Therefore, mainly plants from temperate zones are grown there: flowers - especially roses, vegetables, apples, strawberries, potatoes and garlic.
The 47 km long road between Jarabacoa and Constanza is considered impassable for normal vehicles, here you need all-wheel drive. You won't find a gas station on the way either, so always refuel beforehand.
The Avenida General G. Luperón is one of the main streets, it runs from the airport in a westerly direction across the city.

- Salto de Aguas Blancas. White water waterfall, Salto de Aguas Blancas, 1,680 m above sea level, about 10 km south. All year round, the water there has a temperature between 10 ° and 12 ° C. You can reach the waterfall after a long hike through the mountains. The water plunges 150 meters into a basin surrounded by ferns and other plants.
- Salto de Jimenoa. The Jimenoa waterfall, Salto de Jimenoa, can be reached via a very narrow bridge. The cold water of the river Río Yaque del Norte falls loudly in several cascades 40 m into a basin followed by a canyon in the rock. On weekends, visitors can often find a snack bar with refreshments. Access to the waterfall is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.Price: Entry $ 0.50.
- Salto de Baiguate. The best way to get to the Salto de Baiguate waterfall is by horse. A path with a view leads through a gorge into the valley. There, large amounts of water collect in a pool in which you can also swim. Access is possible daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Rancho Baiguate in Jarabacoa. Tel.: 574-6890. The Rancho Baiguate in Jarabacoa is the best starting point for excursions to the waterfalls and other hikes. The rustic complex has rooms, a pool and an art gallery. Day visitors are welcome.
- Armando Bermúdez National Park, in the Cordillera Central. Around 750 km² in size. The starting point for hikes and the ranger station can be found in La Ciénaga. There you have to pay $ 5 for a pass, guides are mandatory.
- Reserva Cientifica Valle Nuevo nature reserve, south of Constanza, road to San José de Ocoa. 409 km² in size. The “New Valley” reserve is located exactly in the geographic center of the Dominican Republic. At the same time, there is also the coldest point in the country with alpine vegetation. Temperatures drop below freezing more often at night. Large parts of the forest were destroyed by forest fires in 1983 and are only slowly recovering. The forest is a habitat for countless species of birds.
- Pico Duarte. The Pico Duarte mountain can also be hiked from Constanza, but the starting point for these tours is generally Jarabacoa.
