background
The northern one of the islands in the group Acklins and Crooked Islands is relatively more developed than the southern islands. The administrative center, police station and post office are also located there. The island is around 25 km long and six to eight km wide. The area is given as 239 km², the population with just 350. The main road has been continuously expanded and paved over the past few years. Anglers, sailors, yachties and bird lovers feel at home on this island today.
Main places on the island are Landrail Point in the northwest as well Cabbage Hill and 2½ km away Colonel Hill in the middle of the island. Landrail Point residents are mostly Adventists. For this reason, neither alcohol nor tobacco is sold there. In addition to fishing, the population lives from work in several lemon groves. The second major settlement is the Cabbage Hill community. In addition to two churches, there are at least three bars, a shop, a guest house and a car repair shop. The Turtle Sound in the north half has a connection to the sea and is a popular fishing spot.
South of Landrail Point is a lonely beach, Bathing Beach. It merges into Shell Beach, the total length of both beaches is around 10 km.
The Bird Rock Lighthouse, 34 m high, was built between 1872 and 1876, it is also known as the Crooked Island Passage Light. The small Bird Rock Cay is 1.7 km from the main island and can be reached in 5 minutes by motorboat.
