Cullman is a small town in Alabama in Cullman County. It's about halfway between Huntsville and Birmingham.

The city was founded in 1873 by the German John G. Cullmann, initially with only German settlers.

Ave Maria Grotto
  • 1  Ave Maria Grotto, 1600 St Bernard Dr, Cullman, AL 35055. Tel.: 1 256-734-4110. The complex belongs to the Benedictines of St. Bernard Abbey. Brother Joseph Zoettl recreated various church buildings in miniature between 1932 and 1958. The total of 125 models are exhibited in a natural and rock garden.Open: daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • 2  Cullman County Museum, 211 2nd Ave. NE, Cullman, AL 35055. Tel.: 1 256-739-1258. The museum is located in a replica of John G. Cullmann's house, the city's founder, and shows exhibits from the time of the first settlement by indigenous Indian tribes, from the time of the city's foundation and from the time of the civil war. There are also a few exhibits on the local fauna.Open: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., closed on Saturdays.
L&N Railroad Depot
  • 3  L&N depot, 301 1st Ave. NE, Cullman, AL 35055. Tel.: 1 256-739-1258. The former station building of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad is built in pueblo style and inside there are exhibits around the theme of railways.Price: Admission is free.
  • 4  Cullman Veterans Memorial Park, 1544 Sportsman Lake Rd NW, Cullman, AL 35055. The Memorial Park was built to commemorate the Alabama soldiers who died in the Vietnam War.
  • 5  Sportsman Lake Park, 1544 Sportsman Lake Rd NW, Cullman, AL 35055. In the park there are some picnic tables with a playground, a mini golf course and, as a special highlight, a miniature train with which you can go around the entire lake. Paddle boats can be rented in summer.

Events

  • Bloomin Festival. In April, the Bloomin Festival takes place on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey. Craftsmen and artists exhibit themselves and their work. There are stands of painters, potters, glass blowers and wood carvers, goldsmiths and fashion designers and much more.
  • Strawberry Festival. The Strawberry Festival invites you to visit the Cullman Civic Center, 510 5th St SW, in May. In addition to a farmers market, there is music, food and drink and a few stalls with handicrafts.
  • Oktoberfest. In October the residents celebrate their Oktoberfest. In addition to food and drinks, the supporting program is varied. There's a Miss October poll, a parade, music, a car show, handicrafts, and a bed race. In the bed race, beds are fitted with wheels and pushed by the teams from station to station in order to master small tasks there.
