Cát Bà is the largest island of the spectacular Halong bay North of Vietnam.
background
Since 1994, the 354 km² island has been part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Some endemic and endangered species live in this protected area, such as the golden-headed langur, of which only 60 animals remain.
In the main town, the city Cát Bà 12,000 people currently live. In addition to tourism, the local people make their living from fishing and agriculture.
getting there
Of Hanoi you go to by bus or train Hải Phong. From there there is a ferry twice a day (2 hours, 80,000 dong) and a speedboat several times a day (45 minutes, 150,000 dong). At the port you are quickly surrounded by relatively aggressive ticket sellers who want to sell you tickets for the speedboat for 225,000 dong. You have to be a bit persistent, then they'll sell you the ticket for the right price.
Day Tour from Hanoi: A number of providers offer two-day tours for around $ 50 from Hanoi out. This includes arrival and departure in a minibus as well as lunch on the mainland. Then it goes by boat to the island. There is a sightseeing tour of some very beautiful caves along the way. The overnight stay is in two-bed rooms on the island. Dinner and breakfast are included.
mobility
The moped is the preferred mode of transport on the island. If you want to drive yourself, you can rent a moped for $ 5 a day. The place Cat Ba is very small and can easily be explored on foot.
