The topography of Cu Lao Cham is mainly mountainous, with no rivers except Hon Lao with small streams with natural forests. The highest point is Hon Lao peak, 570 m high, the other peaks are 70-200m lower. The geology of Cu Lao Cham is mainly pre-Cambrian igneous rocks, mainly intrusive-acidic and weathered rocks. This area has two different rocks, Hon Lao and Hon Dai. Hon Lao, Hon Ong, and Hon Tai are composed of Paleozoic-Mesozoic old granite and mica granites. Lao Cham, six species in the waters of Vietnam are recognized here for the first time. There are 202 species in 85 genera and 36 families of fish and 4 species of lobster and 84 species of molluscs identified.

The Vietnamese Government together with the Danish Government DANIDA sponsors Cu Lao Cham Marine Park, which is Vietnam's second marine park.
