Damascus is the capital of Syria.

Understand

To go

By plane

The best is of course to land at Damascus International Airport, recently renovated, and very well served by many taxis (there is no other possibility by air anyway). In general, it is by nearly two flights per week from the major European cities that Syrian Arab Airlines serves Damascus airport. It is also the cheapest company to get to Syria, but therefore the riskiest! Indeed, the company's planes are recent, mostly Airbus A320s, and the company has never had an accident: personal opinion, the service and reception are even better than in European companies. Once at the airport, all you have to do is get to the city, but don't see any problem: a shuttle runs from the city center to the airport every half hour at a very low rate. You will also find car rental agencies, including major international ones, which you can contact before your departure. Finally, taxis are ready to transport you for around 1000 LS (i.e. 15  non-negotiable: prices went from 600 LS in February 2008 to 1000 LS in May 2008, as for all products and consumer goods). the current price at is 1200 LS.

By train

There is an inexpensive and comfortable train line, direct from Asian Station inIstanbul (Haydarpaça). Combining this with theft low cost which serve Istanbul very well, we obtain the cheapest solution to efficiently reach Damascus from Europe.

By car

Allow a week to get to Syria (at a tourist pace), so better not to be in a hurry!

By bus

  • From / to Amman in Jordan : coaches (500 LS / 7-8 JOD) or shared taxis (800 LS to be negotiated) at Alsomaria West Terminal (from Place Marjeh and Souk Saroujah, red city buses no 15 westbound, 10 LS), 230 km, h with immigration formalities at the border.

Circulate

There is not a square meter in Damascus that is not served by a bus and / or microbus line (bus with ten seats). The one and only problem for the uninformed traveler is that there is no card listing these lines, and the bus plates are all written in Arabic. To the brave to learn Arabic, to the clever to ask for help from his neighbor! Indeed, the inhabitants of Damascus will be happy to help you find your way in the maze of the city: the young people all learn English or French at school and will know how to help you, while the older people (French colonial heritage obliges) have a better command of French.

Taxis are inexpensive, as long as they are not from an international hotel. Most are metered; a city run rarely exceeds 50 LS.
