Daugai is a town in Alytus district in Lithuania. It lies on the bank of the lake of Daugai, thus becoming a holiday resort, and has approximately 1,450 inhabitants.

Daugai is small city that has no public transport. You can actually reach every place of the town on foot or by bicycle (but there is no bike-renting point).

See

There isn't much to see: the majority of tourist come there because of the lake, although there are few interesting places to go to:

  • Church of Divine Providence (Dievo apvaizdos bažnyčia), Savanorių gatvė 17. It is a romantic church with Gothic elements, built in 1862, architect – Tomas Tišeckis. One of the most important churches of the Daugai parish.
  • Jewish Cemetery (Žydkapiai). This mysterious place is in the grove nearby the plage with the same name (alternatively Žydkapės). Daugai used to be a Jewish city, but in the World War II Nazis killed almost all Jewish inhabitants and they were buried on this cemetery. There are stones with names and strange paths. It stretches over the whole peninsula in the lake of Daugai. It's not fenced, so you can visit cemetery any time you want. If you like extreme, visit it at night.

  • Plages of the lake of Daugai. Plages were reconstructed in 2012, they are wide and modern now.

Buy

  • Fish of Daugai. Fish of the lake of Daugai is very delicious. You can't buy it in food shops, but if you find local fisherman, you will taste one of the best fish in Dzūkija.

Eat

There is no restaurants or cafés in Daugai, but there are few markets. The biggest is „Maxima“. It's the largest Lithuanian supermarket chain. The Maxima shop in Daugai is enough for everyday life and you can get there a range of different products. Besides there are 4 smaller food shops.

Drink

Daugai has no bars or nightclubs.
